    • Dear friends,

Presently, I am in the isolation ward here at Vanderbilt University Hospital. As of today, I have completed a very arduous week of chemotherapy and am definitely feeling the effects. I have 48 hours off before the bone-marrow transplant; scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

During the harvesting process I received some troubling news from the transplant team. They explained to me that it was very difficult for them to obtain adequate donor cells from my own body and this is somewhat of a expected behavior for my cancer. Since I have been on constant chemotherapy for 2-straight years, I am severely marrow-depressed. So, what does this mean? They predict this Autologous (transplant using my own cells) will not be successful and we will eventually have to go to the next step of a Allogeneic (using donor cells) transplant.

      Here's a few facts:
      • They needed a minimum of 2 million cells in order to perform the transplant of my own cells.

      • It took four harvesting sessions to get the minimum 2 million cells from me.

      • Normal harvesting is done in one attempt and normally yields 2.5 - 3.0 million cells (in a normal person).

As you can imagine, I still have the hardest part ahead of me. The transplant portion is very taxing on the body and can present many side-effects and/or reactions.

I do have some access to the internet, although it is not very reliable nor speedy. But it is adequate enough o try to stay in touch and do minor tasks.

      :Cheers
      :)
