We all know how frightening it can be to move from an older system to a new. Essentially, that's what we're doing here with the 1.6 Version. This is not JUST an upgrade, it truly is a complete "retooling" of the software. Having survived the worst part of upgrading, I've discovered two easy ways to go about migrating a full site from 1.5 to 1.6. Just wanted to share them for those who are still contemplating this upgrade in their nightmares instead of taking the plunge.
#1: J2XML: Totally Easy, FARILY foolproof (IF you set the options first)
J2XML is an easy to use import/export solution for your Joomla!® 1.5 powered website. I have used this and it's great! Worked the first time, no hassle, easy directions. So far, after a thorough going over, all my content seems intact and I'll be uploading for production today.
* Export articles with corresponding images, sections/categories and users from Article Manager
* Export sections from Section Manager
* Export categories from Category Manager
* Export content rating
* Export trashed articles from Trash Manager
* Import from Joomla! 1.5
* Send content to another Joomla! 1.5 or 1.6 site
* Export weblinks
#2 jUpgrade: For more advanced users who don't cringe with detailed instructions:
I found jUpgrade while searching the Joomla.org docs. It's a bit more complicated, and, per the warnings, can REALLY screw up your site. (Read all docs first and think AKEEBA prior to use!) Once used, you'll NEED Akeeba to backup-then reinstall, unless you don't mind several table prefixes sprinkled throughout your database. It took me two trial runs to get it right, but it functions.
Chuckle for the day: The only thing I have NOT had a problem with during my migration adventure is RT's templates and extensions. They are right on the money.
I'm sticking with J1.5 until 1.6 is further along in development, but thanks for the info!
Cheers
