VirtueMart or Magento for Joomla?

  • VirtueMart or Magento for Joomla?

    • I wanted to use Tienda for my latest client, but they need auction capabilities for certain items. VirtueMart and Magento both have auction extensions, but which one will be easier to work with. I have a little experience with both, but I've never used Magebridge.

      What's your recommendation?

    • The best answer I can give you is really a question.

What is your clients business requirement? Why? There may be one extension that doesn't have everything you need even though it has auction capabilities or the way it works in the backend admin side may be overly complicated or timeconsuming and so from a customer requirement perspective means you can only go with one solution.

That may make the decision for you. Also, since you mention you have limited experience with both, you'll have a learning curve either way so you will become the expert as you go.

Therefore, focus on the customer requirement first and map that to a solution based on either research or trial installations etc...

Looking at Magebridge, it seems to have great functionality as well as good integration with the style and accounts of Joomla. That sounds like it may save you time and effort and so whatever the price, it may be true value for money.

It also mentioned "Building a shop with MageBridge is 40% more efficient than with Magento" which implies why use Magento if it is that slow / painful in the first place. Eitherway, give it a go.

Download the trial of Magebrigde and play I'd say.. www.yireo.com/software/magebridge/experience/trial

I do have a little experience with VM but that doesn't allow me to provide you with a constructive position on either solution hence the focus on the business requirement.

Do the same thing for VM and then through use you'll be able to make an informed decision because what one person finds easy my not be the case for you because it is always relative to experience.

Download everything you can as a trial (or that is free) and make your decision based on what your client needs. Ease of use would be one of them because the customer doesn't what to spend 12 hours a week maintaining it because "that's the way you have to do it" when it could have been done with another solution for 2 hours a week.

I do hope that helps you even though it's not from a technical point of view.

      Good Luck.

    • Thanks, I appreciate the reply. I plan on testing both options thoroughly this week. I also have a freelance job posted to add auction capabilities to Tienda, but haven't been getting many responses yet.

    • i have not have a positive experience with VM. I know a lot of folks that have had the same experience. Please research VM before committing it to a production site. Very buggy. Uses flash a lot, which may be problematic for Apple users.

I have not used it in a while and these issues may have been addressed but most folks I know stay away from VM.

      Just my 2 cents.
