Wrapper - SMF - Best way to go about this?

  • Wrapper - SMF - Best way to go about this?

    • First i think i'll explain what it is i am trying to achieve exactly, that way someone might be able to help me and let me know what's the best method to go about doing this.

I want to have a Forum on my website. Now i've heard that SMF is probably the best to use in collabaration with Joomla. So what i want to do is have the forum wrapped into my website (so i am guessing i should also use a bridge to do this). I've read somewhere in this forum that if you wrap your forum with Joomla that it isn't searchable by Google. Is this true?

Is it best to keep your forum as a seperate entity?
Am i correct in that this forum is actually wrapped inside of the Joomla site?
Does the regular search function of your joomla site also search the forum if you use a bridge?

I think i should also ask to keep in mind that i'm going to be running this on J!1.5RC1 Many thanks for any help which anyone can give to me.

    • The forum is wrapped on this site with the joomla!hacks bridge.

Wrapping is not necessary, just personal preference

    • Correction:

This forum is integrated to the main site (joomla) using Joomlahacks Bridge. It isn't wrapped, though, but the SMF theme was designed to mimic the looks of a wrapped forum.

    • Awh, thank you very much for clarifying it for me. Although i've now realized it won't help me as i've been reading up on SMF and from what i've gathered due to the licencing changes for Joomla, they will no longer be supporting the Joomlahacks Bridge (well developing it further so that it could work with Joomla 1.5) which is very sad as i am already on 1.5.

    • I've always ran SMF as a separate entity. I never liked the idea of sharing DB's. I one of the two got hacked or damaged, I always had one or the other to function with. Also, I was always a little skeptical of the SMF optimizations, error corrections, and problems one may get into later if you needed to restore your forum.

I may be naive, but I made the choice just to leave them separate... for better or for worse!

    • I agree with you fully. Truthfully, the log in would only really be for the forum anyways, just kinda liked the way this site (rokettheme) had the user's profile picture and details integrated through-out so wanted to go for that friendly community feel of things.

Maybe i could just someone put a log in module which logged the user into the SMF, but had nothing to do with joomla users, on my joomla website. ---> Something in there made sense to me.

    • Once upon a time, I integrated some forum stuff into my Joomla site via using the SSI functions of SMF. I don't think it's really possible with the security issues, but you might check into that option to see if someone has come up with an viable option for a log-in module. Don't get your hopes up... but check out the SMF forum and see http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php

I am pretty sure that the SSI functions are just a series of reports, but it has been a while since I looked into them an maybe someone has come up with something new recently.
