SEO for Joomla Site

    • I have been trying to optimize my site, besides the Search Engine Friendly URLs, extensive research of keywords, tags of images I used, back links with the right anchor text,h1 , I am sure there is still more than I should do. Comparing my site with another photographer , who is consistently on page one in google, I don't know why I am still on page 2 with my site( www.vip-wedding-hawaii.com/ )
I noticed that each page seems to appear twice once with www and once without in website auditor and I am not sure if that causes any issue. But on my server there is only ONE version. I also see some html code errors in website auditor which I don't know how to fix.
My targeted keyphrase is Hawaii wedding photographer.
Any advice or mentioning of a great tutorial or even a paid private online session, what I need to fix, would be greatly appreciated by me.
      Thanks Angy

    • Thanks for bringing this up :)

A tutorial about this has been on my list for some time now and your site would make a great example.

Send me a more detailed PM of what you have done already to get your rankings higher and what you think could get it on an even better position.

    • at the same time, you can check where your competitors are getting links here: opensiteexplorer.org, also you can open a 1 month free seomoz account and have your site checked for crawling errors and get on-page optimization reports and recommendations.

    • 2-3 years ago I heard that for google keyword tags are useless. It just analyses the text.

    • agree, meta keywords are useless, also the keyword tag will show your seo efforts to your competitors.
You have to choose with or without www and use the canonical tag.
You have a long meta description and is keyword abusing.
home page is heavy you have a lot of photos, you need a light home page and content rich.
do you really need that big free space with the background image in top of every page?

    • thanks for the feedback. I rewrote my global meta keywords. Not so sure about the canonical tag, since on the server only one page exists. I am not sure why the reports all show that there are two versions or if this is something that happens automatically when hosting on hostgator.
Really, do I need to take off the gallery on the homepage? Would that help with my ranking?
Some sources I read the rule of 1/3rds doesn't apply regarding the background image, when I am using CSS. Any suggestions on that?
By the way I was on page 2 today for my targeted keyphrase. :-)

    • Great discussion on SEO. Prim, if you write an SEO tutorial, that would be terrific. Your tutorials are always helpful and thorough. If you do, can you say a few words about any suggestions for this scenario:
Client has their site live; has been there for 7 or 8 years. Placing in position 1 for primary keywords, position 2 or 3 for secondary.
I'm rebuilding their site in Joomla (theirs is currently an old 1and1 site) on a temporary URL right now. Any tips for making sure that when the old site is taken down and their permanent URL transferred to new Joomla site, that I do all I can to maintain their positions?
(if it helps, old site is still hosted with 1and1; Joomla site hosted with Rochen and plan to stay there).
Thanks a million Prim :D Kate Wilder

P.S. Remember that some of us are still learning so the more detailed the steps, the better

Things on the web are available through both "www" and non "www" urls, so the idea of canonical urls is to force that one is used and the other is not. If they visit the site by way of the non-used one, htaccess redirects will force them to see the one you want to use.

Here's a post on how to force one or the other:

      http://www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=92&t=46753&rb_v=viewtopic#p243473

After setting this up, you'll slowly see the non-used one drop off of your stats.

The plugin listed might be old. I prefer to use the code way and not the plugin.

    • I redid my site. Thanks for all the suggestions. The biggest changes I made on my home page, I took the slideshow off and moved it to the portfolio. I changed the text and made it a lot shorter. I added testimonials and some info. I noticed already a smaller bounce rate and better interaction of site visitors, they stay longer on the home page and I am getting more inquiries. But I dropped down to page three in google for my targeted search phrase.
