    Which forum software?

Posted 17 years 2 months ago
    • Looking for general advice on which forum software is best.

I've used SMF and am now using Fireboard but I've decided to make the forum separate from the site and run it outside of Joomla completely.

I'm tempted by vBulletin and won't use phpBB but would any of you suggest others?

    • vBulletin.

Depending on the purpose and structure of the site, I don't always see the need to have complete integration into Joomla. Joomla is a great tool to manage the content on the site. If most of the members are just forum users, why would they need to have a login for Joomla?

I'm leaning that way for shops also. Basically, if the main part of the site is only edited by a webmaster, and you don't bother with a comment system, you have to wonder why you need members in Joomla. Instead, use the right tool for the right job.

I've always like vBulletin, and have been using it probably since they first popped into the scene. And I don't mind paying for a good product like it. I actually wish Joomla had the kind of user management and permission that vB has.

    • I would put my thumb up for IP.Board. I have never like vBulletin, since it looks abit 1995-ish.

    • Damo, you should really look at phpbb again. You can't compare 2 to the new version 3, they are completely different beasts
