DocMan & DocLink with no editor

I'm trying to use DocLink with no editor but it doesn't add the link to my content.
The DocLink button shows on the bottom of the content entering box, the dialogue box opens and lets me select a file and its display options, but when I check "OK", it returns nothing.
I've tried turning the editor back on and then it works fine (I guess I need an editor toggle component).
I'm using Joomla 1.0.12 with the Versatility III template and DocMan v1.4.0 BETA2 (because I couldn't find earlier versions ??? ) I've tried Firefox 2 on both a mac and PC and IE6 on a PC.
Any suggestions?
