Is it OK to advise users to upgrade browser?

  • Is it OK to advise users to upgrade browser?

Posted 17 years 7 months ago
    • Hi Forum

I've spent so much time over recent months trying to get stuff working in IE6 that I'm thinking about giving up trying and simply putting a note on the site instead; advising users to upgrade their browsers.

Anyone got any thoughts on this please? eg why not?

    • I would advise using separate css files for IE6, giving it a slim-downed version of the main template. I've done that on two sites and people don't notice. The IE6 users are happy (because they don't know what they're missing). The users with modern browsers get the best experience. I am also considering using Daniels Now You See Me module to show a module to IE6 users urging them to upgrade and providing a link to download FF... could earn a bit of money from that too I guess... enough to pay for hosting at least :)

    • Hi Gollumx
Point taken. There must come a point where it's no longer practical to do that (make separate css) though? And sometimes it seems it's not just css - javascript conflicts are a problem too?

Got a link for the Now You See Me module? I tried Google but no luck.

So who gets beaten by the ABs in the final?

    • OK I found that module (ninjoomla.com - right?) - thanks for the tip, GollumX there's some very useful stuff on there.

    • Cheers Jon.

The js conflicts, like the css, can sometimes be disabled for IE6 without the loss of core site functions, navigation, or accessibility.

I tend to shy away from too much js.

Don't worry about the typo, I know you meant to type "So who gets beaten by the Aussies in the final?" ;)

    • You're dead right again, of course.

      About the js, I mean.
