Please offer advice on banner ads...

Posted 17 years 5 months ago
    • I am interested in adding a few Banner Ads to one of my websites. It is a community site that centers around a computer golf game. I do not charge memberships or anything like it, but the cost of running this site is one I no-longer wish to "fork-out" myself. i have never tried to market this site before, but due to certain financial difficulties, I am gonna try to recoup the expense of running this site.

Does someone have a brief tutorial or instructions on how I should go about doing this?

      Thanks,

      Wage

    • I am not sure this is a tutorial but it might point you in the right direction. There are two pieces that I have been looking at, Google Adsense and Openads. With Openads you can manage Adsense and other players with.

      www.openads.org/

      www.google.com/adsense/login/en_US/?gsessionid=VsL3UG4kCss

There are some extensions for Adsense but I have not seen anything for Openads yet.

Once you get signed up publish the appropriate content into your template and watch the money flow!

I went through all of this years ago. I had a few web pages that were costing me a lot of money and time to run. One day I said to myself "if you can't figure out how to make money doing this then your should shut it all down and do something else."

I found that the best way to make a profit on web pages you own is to sell advertising on them. But the key to selling advertising on web pages is "page views." Because each page view is an opportunity to sell ad space. You need a lot of page views. When I make web pages for myself I am thinking all the time what can I do to generate more page views on this site.

You can put Google adsence on pages but to make money you need lots of page views. I have Google Adsence on web pages I own that generate about 50,000 plus page views per day. That produces some money but not as much as I would like. You can do better if you have a combination of Google Adsense and banner advertising that you have sold and generate.

Now selling and generating your own banner advertising is expensive and time consuming. But the rewards are good if you can generate a lot of page views. To do this right you need your own ad serving software which costs about $3,000 and you need a Windows server with MS SQL Express Edition software on it. The server is going to run your $250 per month and there is a fairly large learning curve in all of this. You also need selling skills. Because you will have to get on the phone and sell the advertising space. This is not that hard because your selling targeted advertising. If you have a golf site you sell advertising to people who make golf stuff. But if you can do this the rewards are greater because your keeping all the money. Again page views is the key. I sell 50,000 page views per month for $100 per month. So it takes a lot of page views to make a lot of money. These page views can be spread over several sites because this type of set up can display banners to several web pages that you own.

Our you can find someone like me who will serve the ads to your web page/s for a small monthly fee. This gives your clients a control panel where they can view the number of impressions and the click ratio. I'm sorry I had to stick this ad for the services I do for people but I could not explain all of this showing you the options.

So if you do the math you need about 500,000 page views per month to generate about a $1,000 gross from banners advertising. If also have Google adsence in the right places on these 500,000 page views you can generate another $200 from Google maybe more but probably less.

If you want to use some company to generate advertising that pays you per click on the banner advertising then you need lots and lots and lots of page views or they won't even talk to you. If they will talk to your they will pay you pennies on the dollars generated. Not a good deal for a small operation.

Tastefully located targeted advertising on web sites never bother the people viewing the web pages. Because your displaying ads about stuff they are interested in. If fact it enhances the web page if done properly.

      Good luck to you.

      Ray
