What size screen do you prefer for your design work.

Hi there,
Its interesting to see and know what techniques suite people. Well for a sad'o like me anyhow. I'm in the market for a new screen and looking for ideas. Especially ones from veteran designers.
I have a mate who has a 42" 1080p panel on his desk to a one who has three separate smaller screens working together to probs my most successful web designing friend who has the world smallest IBM laptop
So, what display configuration do you use or would you prefer to use? - SCIENTIFIC FACT - Santa's sleigh, weighed down with all those presents and traveling at supersonic speed to get to every households in one night, would encounter such massive air resistance that the entire contraption would burst into flames and be vaporised within 4.26 thousandths of a second :]

Basically the rule of thumb is: get the biggest screen with the highest resolution you can afford. Better yet, get two. That said 2X23" is probalby better than 1X30", but heh, 2X30" is my preference

I like to work with two monitors. I am currently working on two 19" monitors. I like having two so I can set one to 1024 by 768 and see what my site looks like to the majority of web surfers. When I resize the monitor to my normal resolution the desktop is not completely rearranged. It also allows me to keep application like email or browsers full size in there respective monitor.
I have bee thinking about going to 3 monitors but not sure if that will be overkill or not.

42" is too much, IMHO. Also, do yourself a favor and avoid panels that are intended to be TVs. Get yourself a high quality monitor that is 22" or larger, and has a decent contrast ratio. 1200:1 just doesn't cut it.
I am running dual monitors, one 22" and one 18.1". When I can justify it, I would like to replace them with dual 24" monitors, and reuse the older panels elsewhere.
I used to always try to get the best gear, but that habit gets expensive fast. Now, I have resigned myself to the fact that most computer equipment will have about a 24 month lifespan in its primary role (or less!), so I try to get stuff that is at the sweet spot price/performance wise.
My other suggestion is to hit somewhere like newegg.com and check the reviews on anything you are looking to get. Sort by "worst", and read the complaints. Avoid products that have large numbers of articulate complaints.

I thought the more 'real estate' you could get the better with regards to 42"
What does the contrast ratio do? What is a good ratio?

Hey, I'm a married man with new born child, dog , huge mortgage etc etc. I need no convincing re taking the value for money route.
I always like to buy kit that has been out at least a year.

Most 24" monitors are 1920x1200, which is actually higher than 1080p resolution. This is because computer widescreens are 16X10 instead of 16:9 like TVs.
Contrast ratio is a deceptive thing, because most companies advertise a "dynamic" contrast ratio in which the monitor selectively changes colors to give a subjectively better picture. The TV that you are looking at is almost certainly more in the 800:1 actual contrast ratio. The higher the better, in general, but always double check, because many companies will distort the heck out of their numbers if they think they can avoid outright fraud (and some don't even seem to worry about that). - www.gofftech.com Web Design

Now I just need to actually get them in order to justify the envy! Sometimes I miss my younger days when eating ramen for a month seemed a fair price to pay for getting some "thing" that I really wanted.
