What's an Adobe Fireworks lover to do?

Posted 9 years 4 months ago
    • Got a new computer today, and it has Windows 8.1 so I won't be able to use my beloved Fireworks CS4. And it looks like Adobe no longer sells program downloads anyways -- their business model is now a monthly fee to use their programs. Ugh. As you can see by the fact that I was still using Fireworks CS4, I am a CHEAPSKATE!!!

Anyways, I know a bunch of you are Fireworks users - or were. What are you using now?

    • Hi Kathy,

I come from the print-side of things and I still do much more stuff that is about illustration and design in general.
      I'm not really website specific.

Personally I never really got into FW that much.

I was sceptical about the Creative cloud (and the cost of it) but now I enjoy having the newest version of everything ... always.
So my tools are mainly Illustrator and Photoshop (with a few plugins: madebysource.com/ )
You never could do stuff with FW for print. So ther was no point for me to use FW in my design process.

I know you are on Win ... but most of my colleagues here in germany are on mac.
Many of them switched to Sketch.
      bohemiancoding.com/sketch/
Sadly Sketch is not available for Win ...

Overall I think of designing everything in pxels are over.
Stuff is done with vectors and ... of course ... CSS.

    • Thanks, Henning. I love comparing notes with people on how they work. I am looking at the Creative Cloud thing today and going to make my decision (probably in favor of trying it.)

    • I used to use FW exclusively too (not going to say what version as I'm even "cheaper" than you)...but switched to Adobe CC 2 months ago and can't imagine going back. Considering what you get, it's worth it IMO. Even though FW is part of CC, I find I do everything in photoshop now, and you may find After Effects, Illustrator and Premier are more useful than you think for video content and more on the web. Even at $50/month, in three years you'd have spent about what you would to have upgraded the old CS packages, and as Henning said, you always have the latest version of each program.

Given all the tools in the CC package, I encourage you to give it a try, I think you'll be happy.

    • Well, I have installed the trial version of Adobe Creative Cloud, and with it the Fireworks cs6 and Photoshop CC. Thanks for the encouragement, JM and Henning. I'm ready to bite the bullet!

    • Oh my gosh, that looks awesome. And --- haha --- yes, it does sound familiar. (Pausing to observe a moment of silence.)
