creating sitemap to aid SEO

Someone in another thread (site showcase) advised me to "create in the root folder a sitemap containing both your launch page AND your Joomla! site folder" to aid SEO. They said I might do this because my Joomla site isn't in my root directory and my root directory only contains a splash page. Unfortunately, they didn't elaborate on how create the sitemap.
What I need to know is whether there an automated process for creating the sitemap as they are suggesting or would i manually create an html document in the root that includes links for my splash page, my Joomla site folder and all of the pages within my Joomla site folder?
