Main Menu as Orientation (more so than navigation)

  • Main Menu as Orientation (more so than navigation)

    • I am working on a site, using the Media Mogul Template on J!1.5, that will organize hundreds of maps each one embedded in a separate article. The maps will be organized in a hierarchical structure such as:

      map search/colorado/metro denver/broomfield/mountainview acres

Each map is defined by a wrapper module (map parameters defined by URL) embedded into an article. Each module seems to require a link to a specific menu item.

Goal: I want the main menu item "Map Search" to be highlighted indicating that the user is in the "map search" area of the site--regardless of which one of the hundreds of maps (articles) they are viewing--so the user can clearly orient herself as to what section of the site (ie, Map Search) she is in.

Currently, it seems, that if the article isn't linked to a displayed menu item (or is linked too deeply) the menu item is not highlighted.

Challenge: How do I keep the "Map Search" menu item selected when the user is looking at the maps, without having the main menu drop downs getting completely out of hand? Ideally, I'd like to select certain sub-menu items (say, most the popular ones) to display in the drop downs. However, if I can't do that, I'd rather it only display 2 levels deep (eg "Map Search/Colorado") or without any submenus ("Map Search"). Regardless, at a certain level, the user will rely on links within the article (eg, breadcrumbs, "similar/nearby communities" lists, etc.) to navigate among the maps as they drill down into the hierarchy rather than using actual menu items.

Is what I'm trying to do possible? Is this a template question or a Joomla question?
