Is everyone jumping into Joomla 1.5

  • Is everyone jumping into Joomla 1.5

    • Hello,

I have often heard developers say that you should wait for 6 months approx. when a new generation of software is release - eg. MS Vista - OSX Leopard - SugarCRM 5.x.x - and of course Joomla 1.5

Aside from issues with Joomla 1.5 - which are always being adressed with updates - I suppose one would be concerned about 3rd party extensions.

my question is - what is the general consensus regarding which version to install - i see that rockettheme templates are 1.5 compatible.

Thanks in advance for anyone's opinion.

    • I think the actual break down is more like this:

      15% are moseying
      5% are bolting
      25% are skipping
10% are taking the long way around
      40% are crawling

and 5% are back and forthers.....of which I am one...I go back and forth and base my decision on client/sites needs as well as if all the extensions I need are available.

I will say this, I was worried about how fast 1.5 versions of extensions would come out, but so far it has been a pleasant surprise

    • Depends on what you are doing. 1.x is great and stable with lot's of extensions. 1.5 is great and stable with some extensions.

I am sticking with 1.x, because it is what most of my sites are and I know it, also, there is like a million plus sites using 1.x (my guesstimate), but as I familiarize myself with 1.5 I will determine if I can convert current sites or make some of my future sites 1.5.

I would recommend you base it on what the end result of you site is - then see which one best suits what you are doing. Each have their own +/-'s.

      Best of luck.

see, I got 4 clients running on Joomla! 1.0.x and one the bigest problem are the extension!! once you have showed something to ur clients and if they life it u can't say no, the problem is that your are responsible for the updates and security risk of their sites, and if you say, "we have an update, but you wont be able to use this anymore" whats gonna happen is that from a happy client you get a unhappy client and you don't want that.

so for me is like Joe K I have to be back and forward to keep my clients happy.

    • I'm waiting too... I run a Testsite on J!1.5 to get used to it, but I won't switch production-sites, before the first serious 1.5-Bugs are found & fixed and Stable 1.5 versions of various components are out...

    • Head first into 1.5. Stick with the basics, install components as they become available / stable.

As software is upgraded, support tends to focus on the latest version.

Although the previous version may have more extensions, documentation, and support, as the newest version moves to to the forefront so do the techies and support.

Try getting support for Window 98 or Windows 2000.

When XP came out, it was neck and neck with NT 2000 for support with 98 lagging behind.

When Vista came out, 98 support dropped to almost zero and NT 2000 took a slide.

It's always the latest version that gets the most attention, I think.

Even though there's a solid core of 1.0 support and extensions, moving to 1.5 is the logical choice.

      All IMHO.

      ;)

    • I manage 6 sites, and I'm sticking with 1.0.xx for a while yet. Apart from the hassles of changing over to 1.5.xx, I'm tired of being an early adopter in the ICT world. So I thought that, this time, I'll sit back and wait. :-\

    • JEM618,

to stick to your Windows-Example. As XP came out, it was a total mess and is was a real PITA to work on (not to mention, that a lot of Programs didn't run on XP, even not in "Compatibility Mode") before SP1 came out - by this time, most Software was ported to XP too...
The Windows98-Comparison would rather fit to Mambo, than 1.0.x ;)
