Getting ReadMore to work

Hi,
When I try to use ReadMore to shorten an article on the front page, it appears where I insert it, but when you click on it, it goes to a blank page that says something to the effect of file not found. What step am I missing to make the article appear on the second page?
The same problem happens when I create a blog-style layout for a section. When I click on the menu item for that section page, it comes up with the same empty page.
