Full Server For Under $100 a month

Posted 17 years 1 month ago
    • Right, I guys
Basically I need a server for less than $100 a month, and I was looking at the first option at www.theplanet.com/dedicated-servers/default.asp?Class=ss , and adding cPanel/WHM with Fantastico

How does this package sound, and are there any similar packages anywhere else?

    • Beware of inexpensive "dedicated servers". Late last year I took the plunge and I switched my sites over to a dedicated server.
It took 4 attempts with different companies to get a service provider that was decent, I started off at $75 per month and ended up at a service provider that costs me $150 per month. Actually the service is $220 but I partnered with someone who is using some of the server and we are cost sharing. A good approach if you can work with someone who also needs server space.

The tough part is knowing what is behind the service you are ordering. They all say 24 hour 7 day a week support. Not true! They all claim high uptime, not true! It was the most painful 3 months of my life. there is Nothing more frustrating then having your server go down and not being able to get through to support to get a reboot for hours and hours. One server I had was going down every, single day!!!! No help from support on figuring out why. Once I got on a decent server with good support I can count the problems I have had on 2 fingers and both were promptly fixed. In fact when I called in on them they were already addressing the problems.

Consider teaming up with one or more people to share a dedicated server and get a good service provider. it lowers your cost, you control how the server is being utilized and you get all the benefits of a dedicated server.

Just a tip based on my own experience in trying to go low price.

    • Hmm interesting, thought I would imagine any server from the planet to be acceptable as RT is hosted there, where did you get the server from?

    • If you get a server from theplanet or softlayer you have the control to restart your server when you want.

    • I was deffintely thinking the planet, and softlayer website loads slower for me than the planets. Maybe that is a bad indication, but I always consider that...

    • I don't recall all the hosting companies I used (blocking bad memories) but the first was Managemybox. it was actually OK but I had difficulties with reliability. ( and I think I was informed by some of the good people here that the processor I had really was not made for a web sever) I am by no stretch a pro at server management but the more I delved into dedicated servers the more I learned what to look for in a company. The problem is that if your site is up and everything is running well, then it really does not matter how good the service is because you rarely have to use it. But when I was trying to incorporate new web site features and the server crashed or something went wrong then I really got to know the meaning of service.

For example all hosting service tells you that they allow you to reboot the server, just send us an email to a special priority address and it will get done. Once in a while you may need to reboot and it goes fine, you send an email and 15 or 20 minutes later you are back up. What I found was at certain times of day I would not get rebooted promptly, so I would call, wait a long time on the phone with messages like "you are first in line, the next availble tech will be with you shortly. Hmmm after an hour I got the feeling no one was there. I understand this happening once in a while but twith a couple of the companies it happened a lot.

Like I said when everything is humming along, service does not matter so much. On the last server I had, my site was going down every day and I thought I had real problems with my web site. When I loaded my site on the last server I purchased everything just worked and I did not have any downtime. I figured it was not the Joomla site after all, had to be the server config.

Which brings me to the other thing I learned. It helps a lot when you have someone who actually knows how to manage a server. Which I do not. I know just enough to be dangerous.

I still think that sharing costs with someone is a good route to go if you do not have the cash to lay out every month to get the server you really need.

      Best regards

Like you, when I first started I used to send emails to restart the server and it took forever. Then one day I did a traceroute and found out that I was going through a reseller for Softlayer. I did some research and a week later I moved everything directly to Softlayer which allowed me to restart my own server when needed; as well as manage a lot of things I used to have to send a support ticket for.

I am no longer at Softlayer, because I no longer host games, but while I was there everything was perfect. However, they don't have servers any where close to under $100

    • So what would your top tips be then? Just pay a little more (say $150)?
  • Re: Full Server For Under $100 a month

    • I dislike saying paying more is better (AKA "you get what you pay for") because this is not always true in the internet world. In fact, I think that Joe hit on a good point, and that is, you never know if you are buying service from a reseller or an actual hosting service provider. It is difficult to find this out, although I made it a point to ask after the second service provider.

Another thing worth mentioning is that all the sites that rate hosting services should be suspect. Many of these sites sell a favorable review to hosting companies. They are not true independent reviews.

I finally found a good provider by asking someone who had several servers, who he used. In fact he was able to negotiate a little better server for me because he was a good client.

For me it seems like a total crap shoot.

Oh, one last thing, two of the hosting providers actually provisioned me with slightly better hardware than the package I had ordered. I think what happens is that with the large customer turnover they probable just grab an available box they have and provision that to fill the order. (I often wondered if it sometimes goes the other way with some customers)

Well, good luck in your search for a server.

    • I was just thinking, as I havn't bought it yet, about server 2003 and Joomla
Basically I am very familar with server 2003, and I would quite like a couple of people to be able to remote desktop it, and access outlook which I would install. I realise that Joomla doesn't run that well on IIS, so is there a solution for apache phpmyadmin etc on windows? I know about Xampp and similar solutions, but they wouldn't be good for permanent solutions would they?

My other solution is just to add another virtual machine to my LAN using Xen, and set up remote desktop for that with outlook

      What do you reckon?
