General Joomla 1.0 to 1.5 thoughts

    • Hi all,

I was wondering about the general idea about a conversion from Joomla 1.0 to 1.5

With migration from 1.0 to 1.5 in general many many 3rd party extensions just are not able to follow up on Joomla 1.5 and I see many websites running 1.5 in legacy mode for the sake of supporting 3rd party extensions not capable of running in 1.5 native mode.

So what is the use of your migration? I cannot think of any advantages of a Joomla 1.5 website in Legacy mode compared to a regular 1.0 install.

Somehow it is human to 'want' the number 1.5 instead of 1.0. It's new thus better, bigger, faster ;)

My conclusion after several migrations is that Joomla 1.5 is very nice, but if you want to benefit from the vast majority of available Joomla 3rd party extensions, stick to Joomla 1.0

I am eager to hear some opinions about this.

your conclusion is spot on however it all depends on what you want your site to do

if you want to create a community site with loads of components, modules and plugins then the likelihood is, as you say, you've got to go 1.0 however if you want a simple joomla site that isn't going to carry much content and is going to be fairly static the chances are you can run it on 1.5 - again like you say

its human to want to use the latest but wiser to sit back and wait a little. how does the saying go; fools rush in

    • Both conclusions are accurate in their respective circumstances. However there is one big advantage with1.5 that affects many users. That would be the use of FTP for the primary server communication/file management. Since many users of Joomla are on shared hosting servers, it is not uncommon to run into situations where your joomla files end up being owned by the server rather than the user. usually anything you install after the core Joomla install. (Components, Mods etc..) When this happens, Doing a CHMOD or deleting a file is impossible without assistance from the hosting provider. This is very inconvenient. While this is not an issue with every hosting provider, it is more common than one might think.

files can always be uploaded via ftp
That is true. But not everyone using Joomla wants to install their extensions manually. Or even have the competence to do it. Not a knock on them at all. Just the reality. The new FTP layer solves a significant issue.

    • I work for a college and although we have a fair amount of time invested in 1.0.x development, we're switching over to 1.5 because internal customers found the article controls and editing simpler and more intuitive to use. Most of the content on the school's site is going to be added and changed by the faculty and staff and, therfore, the easier they find it to use the better.

The lack of 1.5 native extensions is a bit of an issue, but most of the ones we were using are already 1.5 or will be soon enough for our use.

Can I ask, the problems you are facing with extensions, do they force you into using Joomla 1.5 in legacy mode?
And... You are writing your extension, or most of them, were already 1.5. Same question are they 1.5 ready for native Joomla 1.5 or do they need Joomla 1.5 in legacy mode.

I am not a 100% technical person but isn't it just as simple as this... Joomla 1.5 in Legacy mode offers no advantages whatsoever compared to a Joomla 1.0.x so why upgrade if you know you'll be running 1.5 in legacy mode due to some of your extensions???

(hence the FTP layer technique in Joomla 1.5 pointed out by phillip hilgaertner in the comment above)
