Replace user modules with single story links?

Hi,
Sporticus is a very good looking template.
The front page is verry impressive, makes an immediate impact.
However I notice that all of the small rectangular modules are user modules.
This means I have to go in as admin to change the content of each one.
I was wondering if maybe I could change these modules to something more dynamic.
Like ...to show the summary portion of the frist article in a particular category.. with a link to the full story.
I have experimented with the minifrontpage remixed component/module but I find that the html it produces is very spaced out and ruins the tightness of the whole look.
Is there something else you would recommend for these module positions?
