newbie: how to make a news site? show 1 article on frontpage,click to see all

hey there,
as I am a newbie to joomla, I havent really understood yet how to make a site with a newsarea published for the frontpage and only the latest entry visible (completely). users should be able to log in, write a new post and save it to the area on the frontpage. at the end of that area, there should be a "read on" button which links to the main news-page with all the articles in it.
how to do this? I am wondering if I have to configure the (home)menu-item as an article-layot or blog or what?
somehow my brain doesnt want to understand.... ???
best thing would be if the new user-added texts had a title, a date/time and then the usual text.
I want the user to have a editor window like usual, and add a new article to the news-category.the frontpage only shows the latest article.
I don´t want a module showing the last changes like roklatest, or a newsflash, just a normal newsarea as seen on the internet millions of times... (maybe its possible with roklatest but i didnt see it)
maybe I already did the right things but not knowing why?
can somebody help me? btw, i installed the hivemind-rocketlauncher!
