confusion over placing articles/elements

Hi there
i am having trouble understanding how to place elements. I am using the catalyst template and have the graphic showing the positions of modules, but if i add a newsfeed of something and choose left, publish it, it doesnt appear on the site.
Can anyone help me out?
also, i was wondering, how does one turn their own news into a newsfeed?

Do you use J1.0 or J1.5 version ?
If J1.5, under Menu Assignment, you have to select the menu item(s) from the list. Can be All, None or a selection of items.
