Question: Views in J1.5 - can we create and use different ones?

Hey guys, I haven't been around here for a while as I've been mega busy! I've got a Joomla question though and I thought you'd be the best bunch to try to get an answer from!
Basically I understand how the whole MVC idea works from working with cakePHP, I wanted to know if Joomla 1.5 allows the same flexibility:
Can we now create different views for components and use them side by side with the original views? If so how do we say which view a particular menu link is supposed to use?
If this is all a little confusing then I'll explain what I'm after. I want to create different ways to display content, but without rewriting the whole content component. So we would have a view for 'blogsection', 'sectiontable', etc etc (standard views) and then also a new view that I'd personally created to say view 2 items in blog format followed by the rest in table format.
Anyone know if this is now possible? From my understanding that's what MVC is all about. It would certainly rock if it was!
