Open Source Server-Side Word Processor

    • I find it hard to believe that one doesn't exist, but I can't find one. I'd like to find one that can be installed on a linux server.

Anyone know of one or something that might work?

Something like GoogleDocs is exactly what I am looking for. However, I cannot really use this with students in our school:
2.3 You may not use the Services and may not accept the Terms if (a) you are not of legal age to form a binding contract with Google,

While it doesn't explicitly say so in the TOS, I believe that it would be illegal to use these services with any child under 13 because of CIPA.

In addition, the terms of service allow advertising--the content of which I cannot control.

That is why I always look for self hosted open source solutions for my students to use--no collection of personal information and no advertising.

I've been able to find all kinds of other solutions: wordPressMu, rnews, pligg, elgg for web 2.0 applications, but I am drawing a blank with a server side word processor.

    • Thanks Mark.

I checked out the link and it looks like they have a lot of good things in place. They have no advertising for students and teachers. From what I can tell, it appears one might be able to set up accounts without revealing student information. They are very ambiguous about CIPA compliance.

For the time being, though, there are issues (acknowledged by Google), regarding some inappropriate content being available to users.

In addition, I have to mess around with DNS setting for our school website. Clearly, this gets complicated and I'll have to run this by (and try to explain to) the tech committee, administration, and possibly the BOE.

I'll keep my eye on it though.

It would be so much simpler if I could just install something on our server. There are projects, but they all seem to be long abandoned. Probably eclipsed by the long shadow of Google.

      Looks good, but the TOS:
Zoho Services are made available by AdventNet only to persons who are above 13 years of age. By using the services you represent that you are 13 years or older.
