Menu Items by Template AND style?

I'd like to use the same template, develop several styles and assign menu items by style, not by template.
There are two reasons that I can see for doing this. 1. I could just load each style as a separate template and assign by this route, but that eats server space. I need to run off of one template. 2. I'd like to have some consistency, but show each menu item as a completely different "website" inside a single domain without subdomaining.
I know there are ways to do this, but try as I might, I cannot find a search combo that gives me an idea here or at Joomla.org's forum.
ANyone with a link or a suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
