How to control front page layout

Hello all,
I am working on this site www.kapahawaii.net . I want to have an area that has three introductory articles on the top, then an Images gallery right below this. So the articles (basically 2 or 3 lines each with a read more link) will be in 3 columns then the images gallery right below them, then the main welcome article.
I know that I can define a location for a module to be located somewhere on the front page. But how do I do this for the articles?
