Site offline and CB Login (Joomla 1.0.13)

Hi everyone
Not sure if anyone can help but thought I'd ask.
I am using Joomla 1.0.13 in conjunction with Community Builder.
I'd like to do some work on the site and turn it offline (via the Joomla control panel).
Additionally I'd like for my serious members to be able to login to see the progress of the work being completed.
Does anyone have the code for this?
I noticed that Joomla 1.5 has the exact functionality that I require... if anyone knows how to complete this and can share the code it would be much appreciated.

Bump them up to manager...then give them access to back end to login. Make sure you have a preview site button in admin...have them click that and they will be able to view the front of the site.
As for code...nope. I just know how to do it the standard way.
