Modifying extentions?

Me again,
There is an extension I downloaded for the website I am doing, FYI:

I like it, but there is a couple things I want to change. I think I found the file to change it in too. But something I don't get, is I can't FTP the changed file into the module's directory. I am assuming this is specific to joomla, as it's happened with other modules too. Previously to get around it, I would uninstall the module, make the change to the original file, and then reinstall it. That's a pain because I have to redo the module and settings in the Admin Panel.
Is there a way around this?
