I have been used to using the search engine friendly patch on 1.015 joomla versions. However, I am starting a 1.5.9 joomla website now and obviously want to optimise the site for the search engine. I am assuming that I need to install the free patch before I purchase the extended patch? however, there is only one file in the free 1.5 version, there used to be various files in the 1.015 version. Do I still upload the 1.5 free patch into the main directory?
It is a free SEF patch that you download from the joomla at work website. This particular patch enables you to add separate descriptions, the paid extension component patch gives you more control over your Meta headings. I use it and all my 1.015 websites. However it seems slightly different to 1.5.9. Like I said before, the free patch I have been using consists of three files, the free patch for 1.5 only has one file. I would imagine that it either goes in the Administration folder, or straight into the main directory, but I'm not entirely sure
OK - finally found it. There are several free SEF components. The one I recommend is sh404SEF, which you can get from the JED and never have to pay to upgrade.
From an SEO point-of-view it can provide a bit more flexibility and control to allow you to target specific search terms with URLs, and it centralises your META data to make it a little easier to work with.
Yes, the 1.5 standard SEF option is a very good one - but a component like sh404SEF can give you that little bit extra 'oomph' in competitive markets.
I think the one you are talking about enables you to have friendly URLs, I've got it installed on a couple of my websites. The patch I am referring to controls your Meta tags and headings. Like I said, the first patch is totally free, then there is the paid version. When you install this, you can add your own headings on each page. I never used 1.5.9, so not sure if it is different to 1.015 when it comes to Meta descriptions and headings.
If you look at my Oscar fish website, you will see that it has friendly URLs, as well as individual headings on each page. To achieve this, I had to install the SEF paid component from joomla at work
I would expect that installation of this component is like any other - via the Joomla Installer. The better place to ask this question, however, would be the JoomlaAtWork support forums.
