Session Directory unwriteable

I'm moving my site to a dedicated server (or rather trying to

The joomla admin panel reports that the sessions directory is unwriteable:Session Directory /var/lib/php/session/ UnwriteableI used WinSCP and navigated to the directory and tried changing the permissions to 777 and then restarting Apache but it didn't make any difference (probably because I don't know what I'm doing).
Does anyone know how to make it writeable? and what effect does it have it's not writeable?

Thank you Arifin, I followed the instructions here:

and added the code to the .htaccess file and it's working now
