    website overhaul, whats your pick?

Posted 15 years 11 months ago
    • helo, there.

Ive been asked to give a new face to this web, www.adampicyl.es wich was actually the one that made us discover rocket theme some years ago, and the first one we made with your awsome templates.

unlucky, its based on Joomla 1.0 and as all the plugins and extras move to 1.5 only, plus all the security issues, it needs pushing up to the new joomla version.

once we have to re-do much of our work, I was wondering if not to give it also a new start. I know I could just reinstall the Versatility III template in 1.5 version, but it could also be a good idea to boost it up with some of the newer and maybe more functionally and graphically updated templates.

The site belongs to an NGO for healthcare, and has to host loads of manuals and tutorials, and -this is a reason to change too- we are installing a video "channel", were many of the manuals will go live and that will be a core feature to the site in future. it has some weekly news to display, but not down to as much as daily basis.

What I do like of the current site is that its very easy to see all the info and the structure at a glance. a simple mouse rolover the menu gives u a perfect layout, and its simple for the new visitors to find order and structure in all the info displayed. (oks, its in spanish... LOL). I wouldnt like to set up a website thats complex and advanced-user orientated only, people come to this site becuse the need some medical info, many of them arent advanced pc users. What I dont like of the site -you discouver this over time, lol- is that it maybe it doesnt use the full screenspace to its max.

I have my eye on "solar sentinel, style5, maybe with some colour changes and so... its a variation to the original web style, but not so dramatically far away it makes visitors feel we have changed too far. as its a huge task to move everything and re-fit it, make new logos, buttons, enhance images, create and edit videos... I thought Id pick on your brains first to see what the pros and cons could be or what your start choice would be.

If you have five minutes to give it a good thought Id greatly apreciate your comments. As I say, there can be a long work ahead, would be nice to have a good perspective to start with.

    • hi there,

i think solarsentinel would be a great template to use for your new 1.5 site.

at the same time i am also a huge fan of the versatility series, so versatility4 would be another option to consider.

good luck with your project! :)

    • Tough to say what to do there. Of the sites I've made over the last 4 years, the one I made with Versatility3 is still everyone's favorite. It really is one of the best templates RT has put out with all those module positions and variations. It's also really easy to work with.

I'd say move to another template if there is an included feature in that template that you like.

    • mmmmm, I love the versatility series too, they are flexible, easy and do a great job. Im wondering even more now what road to take... lol. Only problem with the current versatility4 is that it looked a lil too whitish, a lil too "washed" if you understand me. of course Im guessing I can customize the background colours...

thruth is, once u set down a road and invest dozens of hours in customazing the template, its not so easy in practice to change over.

can you point me out to some other versatility templates webs? Ive checked our forum ones...

and thanks for the input, its really apreciated. im walking up and down my office givving it a big thought these days, lol.

EDIT: two brief questions on Solar sentinel: 1. can u use the pdf-print-email icons and function in the articles in this template (dont seem to activate even tho i did the settings in "show", lol) and 2. why doesnt the intro-read more seem to work either? does it need an extra code apart of the including the red dotted line? cheers, a short answer is good enough.

    • For your two questions, the pdf and print icons should work fine. A lot of times the demo will have a custom module or article that is really just html made to emulate the article structure, so double check that it's the articles actually being adjusted. Also, the same goes for the intro text. If you're working with the rocketlauncher, make sure it's not a module that you're looking at and actually the main content area.

Other options for your templates would be the transparent ones, like Akiraka, Replicantv2, Replicant, and Refraction. You can take the background image out and just have a background color or you can have a simple gradient background image in.

Again, I usually look at the built in features of the template first to see what I want to use because I think they all look so good.
