How to back up your site - worst nightmare?

Posted 17 years 10 months ago
    • Hi all

Had a huge disaster!!!!!!!! Lost two of the most productive weeks on record. I had spent my whole Christmas break developing a whole new online business. I did all the development online and was a bit too trusting that my host had good backups.

Well their server got corrupted and for two weeks was writing bad backups, then the server died and two weeks work on many sites was gone. databases gone, sub domains gone, Custom modules gone. It's all gone - hangs head and cries......

The only thing I have left on my local machine is my changes to RT templates.

I have slept on it so I'm feeling a bit happier but yesterday I felt devastated. Of course I should have taken backups so it's partly my fault.

Anyway the point of this post is to remind the trusting ones to backup!

And also to ask for advice is there a way to create and download an automated backup? I can't think of anything more tiresome than logging into Cpanel and backing up every other day.

    • I've learned three things with computers over the years:

      1. Save often

      2. Backup often

      3. Don't trust your data to anyone!

I know that I've been guilty of being trusting myself. Is there any hope that the hosting company could give you some free hosting for the trouble? On second thought, I'd probably want to get a new hosting company.

Bummer, man! First James Brown then President Ford and now your data. What's this world coming to? Oh, the humanity!!!

    • I like reading your posts Dave always puts a smile on my face.

My provider is awesome and looks after me so well, It was a freakish thing that even shocked them!! And they are aleady so generous to me so I won't ask for more.

It really comes down to what you say.

I am trying out one of the backup bots, got it working on one site but not on my big site? Hmmmm more testing.......

    • I don't know how that component will work with a 'big' site. There seems to be some 'cutoff' size that will not work on my biggest site. Fortunately the hosting company offers a daily scheduled backup to a separate site. That make thing easy. I've been hacked once, but was back up within the half hour (of finding out I was hacked).

Thanks for the comment about the funny stuff. Although you may think I'm funny, I'm really a pathetic basket case, threatening to slash my wrists at any moment.

      Just kidding!

    • Firefrog, I know it's a nightmare! I remember a very bad experience like that and fortunately I restored all the site with a fresh (but manual) backup. And I remember the support from Dave too ;)
Also your post remember me the decision I took! Buy a good component to cron backup of the entire site (root & DB); I will buy JoomCloner tomorrow! :) I really don't want to experience another joomla nightmare...
I think it's a good idea to invest in a good component ;D

    • Hi! Like mentioned in the message above I buyed the joomlacloner component and intalled the cronjob component too from JoomlaPlug. I tested both of them and work very very fine! You can install the component in unlimited websites! The backup are generated very quickly :D One backup generated have more than 240Mb. Excellent investment for sure!

    • Hi Franck,

do you think cronjob is sufficient for the task. ie. is joomlacloner worth the $ if cronjob can do an equally good job?
    • Say no to Internet Explorer 6.

    • Well GollumX, I'm not a guru of Cpanel and always have dificulties to lead with cronjob task... :(
With joomlacloner you can manage easily the backup of all your sites (directory and DB); also you can exclude directories and/or tables from your backup file. It's an useful function for me. You can choose where and how send your backup file (FTP, local server or email).
With the Cronjob component you can choose when you want to do it (in my case everyday now!) and If you want, the new file can overwrite the previous in the local server.
For me it's an excellent option because this job is easy now and I'll never live another nightmare :D
