Need Advice for a High-Content, High-Traffic Joomla Site

    • Howdy,

Right now we're currently working on a complete redesign to go along with a merger we've completed. Anyhow, I figured I should come here for a bit of advice - its certainly one of the more knowledgable and helpful sites I belong to :) .

Basically, we've got a pretty bright future, but I needed some professional advice for the design aspect of the site. As the site grows, so will the information presented on our homepage. Sites such as IGN are prime examples of how much information gets crammed onto the frontpage of gaming websites.

I've attached a quick mockup I did playing around; its kind of crude (I've thrown up old images I had created, an advertisement I found fairly fast and the logo is going to get replaced with something more unique and applicable) but it gets the point across of what we're currently looking at. I'd show an actual link to everyone but right now its sitting on my computer being worked on.

My question is this - what does everyone think about Carbonation being used as the basis for this? It
s going to be an extremely high volume website, and I was just wondering if its a smart thing to use something as heavy as Carbonation. Furthermore, I was also wondering if anyone had any ideas on the best way to present information on the homepage. Right now I've got it laid out fairly accurate as to what we're currently looking at (although I can't find where I screwed up the iJoomla CSS for the stupid side module where the text is all centered). Do you think this is a good way to go about it, or should I try and figure out something a wee bit easier?

Oh yeah - what you can't see is a module below the one on the left and "Mute TV" - a flash based video that gets changed out every couple of days on the homepage.

I'd really appreciate any advice anyone can give me; right now I'm in a deadlock. I'm liking where its going, but at the same time, I can't help but feel a bit disappointed. Just need a little something to get the brain turned on :) .

      Edit - D'oh! I might want to attach the attachment :) .

    • The new Sporticus would imo be way better than Carbonation for this type of job.. It was build for such tasks..

    • Hi Christian,

I agree. Sporticus modified might be a better choice. It's certainly got a lot of options for you. However, I'm not familiar with the weight (loading size/speed) of that template.

I'm sure you've seen the Trooper series. What are your thoughts about that design base?

    • Originally I went with Carbonation as it was practically sold. Sporticus on the other hand was a bit of a harder sale, but after I showed them how much easier it would be for everyone involved, common sense prevailed.

I did try and play around with the Trooper series; but it was just too much in my opinion. So far, Sporticus is coming along very nicely and I'm loving the opportunities it provides; the only thing I'm trying to do right now is redo the header to get something a bit more fitting.

Now, another question - do you think we should just keep gradients as the header (as pictured below) or do something more graphical that ties into the gaming aspects a bit better? Keep in mind what you see attached doesn't have a logo or anything in there - yet :) .

    • I will be using Sporticus for my new site and imo a non gradient header would be best for this template...
For some reason a clean graphical header suits this type of template nicely..

Hmmm... That is a design question. I'd like others to chime in on this, if they would.

I'd say that the banner (gradient) is OK with me, if your going to have images in the box below. Two big images might conflict with each other. Plus, if the gradient is too heavy, that may conflict too.

Yes, the header is blank, usually, with, I believe, a transparent PNG over it for the site name. You might try to loose the PNG over the header and just enhance the header graphic a bit.

Again, someone else my have some special inspiration on this for you.

Though I was the creative director of an ad agency (I owned it), I'm not officially a designer, but I play one on TV. :)
