    • Hi Thomas,

Sure, Macs would fair better with speed if you upgrade, just like PCs.

In the past, Mac software ran a lot longer on an old machine (OS) than PCs. I have had 14 Macs over the years, but even though the speed was why I upgraded to new machines, the software would still run on machines that were 10 or 12 years old. With OS X (for the Mac) that has changed. OS X is a completely different OS and the longevity of most software only goes back to the OS X beginning.

Also, the Mac seemed to be better constructed in the old days. The components for PCs are a lot more reliable now, but I still believe that the Mac is constructed a little better. Now it's a mater of taste and what you learn on and fell comfortable with.

      Just my two cents.

    • I've had a roommate in University who remains a friend today that has ALWAYS pushed Macs on me, and actually has had a fair bit of success in doing so since I'm actually weighing the options now :)

However, I've always wondered if Mac users have ever known what it feels like to have real "speed" in a machine. Many of you have had both types of machines and could comment on this, but in my experiences I've always found Macs to be sluggish in comparison to a PC on the same level. But for my friend Jason, he would always question, "what do you mean you think my machine is slow? It seems fast enough to me..."

But when I use a system, and especially a brand new system, I would expect to have a very quick response time, loading time, etc. I mentioned that I test drove the iMac Duo Core 2 for a week a little while back. Well, I loaded my photo collection onto it (6600 photos at the time) and suddenly iPhoto became quite sluggish.. and to me I found that to be unacceptable, especially on a brand new machine costing $1700.

In contrast, I downloaded Google's Picasa 2 on my current machine, a PC at 2.4ghz with only 512mb on RAM, and the same photo collection loads very quickly in comparison. I'm actually amazed at the difference.

    • Hmmm... Phil, usually a Mac comes stock with most all the bells and whistles turned on. If the machine has a minimal amount of RAM, the machine can seem sluggish. Whenever I get a new Mac, I turn off the goodies in the OS and things speed up quite nicely.

I'm on a PC this evening, but the Mac that I have here at this location is only 1/3rd the clock speed of this PC, so naturally it's going to be slower, but I've not have the same experience that you speak of. Maybe it could be the comparison of apples and oranges? Not sure.

    • OK. With the iPhone now being introduced, I'm not sure I can resist any longer ;D

It's exactly what I've been wishing for - The combination of my old iPaq and my old cell phone into a slender, sleek device that does it all. I'm sold on the iPhone. Now, I know that the iPhone is completely compatible with PC's... but would it be a lot nicer to have it sitting beside the iMac? hmmm.

Ok, a serious question though - Let's say I have $250-$300 or so to make one upgrade on the factory iMac. The best choice for an upgrade would be:

      - Processor upgrade (2.16ghz up to 2.33ghz)
      - Memory upgrade (1gb up to 2gb)
      - Disk upgrade (250gb up to 500gb)
      - Video upgrade (128mb vram up to 256mb vram)

My first thought is that the memory upgrade can be done easily, at any time and that the rest of them would just be simpler to have done at the factory. What do you think?

Agreed, this iPhone is amazing ! Too long before we will get it in Europe (end 2007) :'(

Concerning speed of Macs, did you test latest Mac Intel machines ? I have the MacBook Pro 17 with 2bg and run Windows on Parallels or Bootcamp, and it's really fast.

    • Yes, I have tested the lastest Intel iMacs. I have a strong feeling that a system with 2gb of ram would be much more satisfying than the 1gb.

Has anyone heard any more about the OSX Leopard release date? Did they announce anything yesterday?

    • Philip, first don't buy ram from apple. Get the other upgrades first. I would advice the faster processor from the factory as you are not going to be able to change this later. After you get the mac, goto www.macsurfer.com (they desperately need a template :) , and see the ads at the top. You will find the best deals on memory here.

Nope they haven't announced anything for Leopard yet (as far as I know), but Steve said it'd be shipping in spring. I can hardly wait ! :D

    • I just spoke with someone from Apple re: making an iMac purchase. I wanted to know if I could place an order with 1gb of ram using only 1 stick (as opposed to the standard 2x512mb sticks). The answer? No, that's not possible. As if!

Oh, he also said there was no release date for Leopard yet either.
