I am designing an updated site for my friend (His site is old and with a rubbish hoster)
www.beatlestours.co.uk/
I have designed his new site on an unused host package I have with a different domain name
www.liverpoolsstory.co.uk/
- So his old site was still live during the re design
I am a little confused by your question. Simple question, do you want to move your website from one hosting company to another?
if this is the case then there are various ways of doing this quickly and easily. I've done it numerous times using JoomPack and kickstart. JoomPack is a fantastic component that will literally pack your website into a nice little bundle. You then upload this package onto your new server along with kickstart which is a script. You then create a new database on your new hosting and then run the script (kickstart) This will then install your website onto your new hosting. When you run kickstart, it looks identical to a normal Joomla installation which way things are so easy.
Sounds complicated, it's an absolute piece of cake. I can move a website from one host to another in just a few minutes and have it up and running perfectly.
Sorry Penn, I realised I may be writing gobbledegook
The old site is currently live and hosted with a rubbish hosting company - The old site will be binned in favour of my new design
So I will be setting up a new hosting package and arranging to have the exsisiting domain name moved to the new host - Thats the easy part
I have built the new site on an existing domain (
www.liverpoolsstory.co.uk
) and what I want to know is what I need to do move the new design at domain
www.liverpoolsstory.co.uk
to the new hosting package and domain beatlestours.co.uk - Im thinking changes to database, Http, config.sys etc
okay, I would suggest JoomPack for moving Joomla websites.
Go to their website and download it, it's totally free. Download kickstart as well.
Install JoomPack on to the website you want to move and make a backup. Ignore the warning about the output directory. However, I would change the format in which the file will be saved as. I always change it to JPA archive, something along those lines. It's in configurations under advanced I think.
Once you have back to your site up, download the package onto your computer.then upload the archive into your new directory. Upload kickstarts as well, this is a PHP file. If you haven't changed your name servers then you will have to use something like a temporary URL so that you can at least see the site. Then all you do is go to the URL and you will see the archive and kickstart. Just click on kickstart and follow the instructions. Obviously you have to create a database with your new hosting.
If you want any help with JoomPack and kickstart, don't hesitate to ask, Please PM me if you wish, if I'm about, I will be more than happy to walk you through the installation.
