SOLVED Domain name with "-" and SEO

Hi there,
I need to register a domain name eg. www.mydomain.com
This domain is already registered,so i tough to register www.my -domain.com
I would like to know if it will be a problem for S.E.O the fact i inserted "-",as "-" is a symbol.
Another doubt is related to the termination of the domain eg. .com,.co.uk,etc...I would like to know,for SEO purposes,if a register two domain names eg.www.my-domain.com and http://www.my-domain.co.uk,if my target market is in the uk,if would be better if the MAIN domain for the hosting account would be .co.uk,or if it doesn't matter if the main account in hosting provider has the .com as a main domain and .co.uk as a "parked " domain.
Any tips?

Hi Gabrieluk, first off registering the domain with a '-' in it will not affect your SEO although if the domain that is already registered is in the same market that could confuse the market and could be detrimental to your site . BUT you could lose out on the long run from people typing in the domain without the dash.
If your site is targeting the UK then really it is best to go for the .co.uk TLD although you can target any generic domain extension to the local UK market for a trust and visual indicator it would be best to stick with the .co.uk
If you can avoid the use of dashes in your domain you really should try, can you move the words around to find a unique combination that still makes sense and is still easy to type, remember and sounds good.
Using dashes within a domain can lose some trust perception although there are many sites that are very popular with the use of dashes.
It really boils down to what you are trying to achieve, what is the site for? Is it e-commerce is it selling services, is it a company site this should be considered before selecting your domain name.
Sometimes people get blinkered and think everything has to evolve around SEO although SEO is important, brand and perception could be considered more important quite often.
It can be said for a piece of content written on a subject one is written completely with SEO in mind, uses keywords throughout, the title is optimised all though has been placed on SEO.
The other piece of content has been written to be engaging, the title is enticing and creates interest, the copy flows and is informative. Which piece will become more virile? SEO is important but don't let it cloud your vision.

- Having a uk ip helps with ranking, make sure which ever domain you choose as your main domain you do a 301 redirect in htaccess otherwise you will get penalised for duplication.

One more question...I will insert this new domain www.my-site.co.uk instead of another that is installed already in the host as the MAIN DOMAIN.Do you know where should i go into my Joomla install to replace the new domain name?(wich file should i modify to insert the new domain name)

As a beginner webmaster i do not use the .htacess file.You think this is the time to start using?(since this will be the first time i will be doing some SEO).Could you explain what do you mean with "duplication"?

Yes, i am assuming that your webhost is running linux and not windows.
All you need to do is firstly is in admin, go to global configuration and set search engine friendly url's to yes, and use apache mod_rewrite to yes.
Duplication simply means google indexing both domain names which will have the same content, which you don't want.

thanks for the links.This wont happen ,as the old domain will not be pointing to the same account anymore.it will be canceled.
All this happen due to an odd fact.i will tell u the story.
I have this client that started to make a website.The webmaster that was doing the site for him is a scam,that registered the domains in his own name!(instead of my client's name).Now i finished the website for this client,and asked for the old scam webmaster to change the domain name ownership for the rightfull owner,but he is refusing my emails,he just pointed the domain to the name servers i gave him.I know we could go to a domain "dispute",but my client refuses to give a penny for the cybersquatter scam webmaster.That's why we had the idea to insert the "-".So the name would be same,apart the "-".And we will block the old domain.i don't know what the scam will do with domains,but it won't be pointing to my clients account anymore(because i think he wanted to extort money from my client,as he pointed the domains for the new name servers of my client,but he didn't change the ownership,very smart...hehe
)

Well, by using a 301 redirect where you have the original domain now to your new domain, when the search engines come calling they will pick up the redirect and re-index your site under your new domain.
Once this has happened, which will probably take a couple of weeks to a month, remove the redirect and the domain will be worth no more than the renewal fee.
