Even though I've only been using Joomla for a month now and still a newbie I'm already eagerly awaiting a stable Joomla! 1.6 release next year. Hopefully by late February. I am wondering how prepared this wonderful RocketTheme Team is prepared to move along with it.
I can't help but wondering if RocketTheme creating the Gantry Framework and using it with this months awesome Reaction Template is a step towards compatibility or if they have anything to do with each other. Again I am a newbie and without sufficient knowledge of the inner workings of either this is just a thoughtful curiosity.
Joomla! 1.6 is going to rock and I can already tell that Gantry 960 Grid System is also a giant leap forward towards the future of Joomla!... So I can't help but think that this next year will be the year that Joomla! is crowned King and be way out ahead of other CMS's.
Even though I am only a month in I have done a lot of research on several of them and Joomla! seemed to be growing in the right direction and with best Community Support and ecosystem. I am now thinking with 1.6 coming out soon combined with Gantry 960 that I made the right choice.
Anyone with more knowledge care to share their thoughts on this move to Gantry and compatibility with Joomla! 1.6? Any RT Team Members in the know care to share? Andy? lol
I think the Gantry is an independent frame work exclusively RT (at least that is my understanding), but I am sure they have even bigger plans for 1.6. Of course every month they out do themselves and the whole Joomla Template Community.
I chose Joomla over Drupal years ago because of the community support and I can say every year it was a better choice. Show me a long term project with strong community support and I can show you a successful project.

Umm, no. Another template club implemented this 960 grid system months ago.
Well, the 960 project is in a lot of templates. That is what it is designed for, but the RT "Gantry" is just for RT, but it used the 960 grid system. In other words it is not core Joomla or an extension available for everyone.

The 960 Grid system is a small part of what Gantry is, its a feature of it, not its entirety.
Gantry is designed to be as platform independent as possible, so it can be easily ported to our other platforms such as WordPress. This probably applies for Joomla 1.6 as well.
As a general statement, we won't update our 'stuff' until Joomla 1.6 is final and released as such. That doesn't mean we won't be preparing for it, you just probably won't see anything for download until the official launch date.
Louis Landry repeated again last night what they've been saying for the last few months. Their target release date is in February. But they won't know for sure until that time.
Thanks James S... I was just trying to get a better mind wrap around Gantry in relation to the upcoming Joomla 1.6 release. I felt that the 960 grid system had to only be a small part of Gantry after spending more time with Reaction and it is seems to be a huge undertaking you guys must have gone through. Wonder how far back it was being worked on from full concept forward...
I don't think any of us expect RT to release anything prior to any official release or at least stable beta. Where that stands I am hoping that Jamesso is more correct on the timeline then Sam. I kinda felt that it was maturing to the point that it should be moving along fairly quickly now in comparison to how long it's taken to get it this far. I read tons of articles that had it slated to being ready over a year ago.
Very glad to hear that RT will be preparing for Joomla 1.6 as the details become more clear on what the finished release will look like. I'm sure many if not most of your Joomla Club Members will be eagerly waiting to jump over to it once it is stable.
Look forward to more people jumping on this thread if they have any more inside news...
I am planning a couple of new sites and tempted to wait for Joomla 1.6, but also would like to use the new Gantry based templates such as Dominion.
I assume there will be an upgrade route from Joomla 1.5 to 1.6 but of course the corresponding RT template would need to be available.
I haven't seen an answer from an RT team member that provides a sort of roadmap as to how Joomla 1.5, existing RT themes and Gantry will mesh together and the timing.
I know that a stable release is desirable, but I assume that the Joomla 1.6 templates infrastructure must be fixed by now, and would hope that RT are already looking at converting at least the Gantry based themes in readiness instead of being 6 months behind or whatever.
