Seeking Server Recommendations.

  • Seeking Server Recommendations.

    • Estreet, my current server, is un-forthcoming about providing information or assistance with server side configurations, to which I lack access. Estreet generally tells me that they will answer my questions for a fee of around $250.00, when all I am asking for is information and/or confirmation that a problem does not originate in the server configuration.

When Ebay stopped permitting third party servers to host Prostores, Estreet offered to set up Joomla. Judging by the dates found on my Joomla setup, Estreet set Joomla up in January but informed me only a week before Prostores closed on March 1st

The first time I logged on to the new installation, there were login issues. By the second day the installation was no longer accessible, blocked by the login function. After researching the problem, I asked Estreet where the PHP docs are located. One member of the team, rather than answer my question, just told me not to make any changes to PHP docs, as I would make things worse, while the other insinuated that the problem I am experiencing is due to changes I made in the PHP docs- to which I could not find access. He then said they would do a fresh install for $250.00. This is an attitude that I have experienced with Estreet in the past.

I am going to try installing Joomla myself and so I am looking for a server with a reasonable attitude about providing information and/or assistance, if not access to the server side of the configuration.

    • After looking around, I am thinking I will go with Liquid Web. I asked them questions to get a feel of their service attitude. I learned that a shared service does not have direct acsess to PHP but Liquid Web professes to be willing to work with the client on PHP related issues. There are other packages that include direct acess to PHP. I am thinking that I can start with the shared service and change if need be.

I see many discussions about PHP modification. Those people must be on the non-shared services. Liquid Web offers one click installation of Joomla, which only takes a few minutes- as compared to Estreet offering to re-install for $250.00- as the only solution to any issue that arises. Obviously it makes more sense just to move to a different server- It costs less for the install and chances of better customer service are about 1000%.

I see a lot of people are self installing. It is always a plus to understand the installation process but I wonder if there are any other advantages or differences between installing oneself and the one click process?

    • Server? Dedicated server? Host?

Many of us use HostGator or Rochen...

Both offer start up packages all the way up to dedicated servers.
    • Thanks,

    • I use Rochen for hosting some of my sites. They are not the cheapest around, but their service has been excellent on the few occasions that I have needed help, and they have a very good community forum. (And they host the Joomla.org sites.) :)
