Trying to get my business off the ground, designing for myself and designing for the customers of a local IT business. As soon as I make a sell I'll purchase the development membership and post this there. Do you advertise and if so how? How do you provide content for the sites (articles) when you don't know anything about what they do?
I started up on my own last year. Most of my work has come through word of mouth through people I know or friends of people I know. I have tried advertising in the local media and elsewhere but have not had much success. There has been plenty of work to date in any case.
With most of my clients, the agreement has been that they provide the content but I have often been in a position where they have asked and I have been able to contribute to some of the content too. Often this is because I am already familiar with their business!
Often, the reason small businesses don't already have a website is time and the perceived expense. People are so busy working *in* their businesses, they have little time to work *on* their businesses and this includes coming up with content for their website. If you have skills in this area, then this might give you an advantage over your competitors.
