Moving a whole joomla website

Hi,
I want to do a redesign of my website with a new template to give it a new look but i want to design it in a subfolder of my hosting before i put it live.
so i design the new joomla website in www.mysite.com/new once im happy with it i want to move that whole newly designed joomla site into my root folder...
what is the best way of doing this? Is it as simple as downloading the whole "new" folder to my pc with FTP and then delete everything on the website and reupload the "new" folder i downloaded?
does everything work the exact same ? does nothing get messed up??
I want to ask here before i destroy everything by accident.

Use Akeeba Backup to move the site from your (localhost or) sub folder to the root.

Sure that's possible and a very safe route to take.
- backup you're site (files & database)
- upload the backup to the new map or to a local test-webserver on you're pc (like xxamp or wampserver).
- create a new database (on you're webhost or local)
- adapt the joomla configuration.php to the new situation (file location and database)
- browse to the new site location
- in the back-end clear cache and check the file and map permissions.
- once done backup production and test sites and repeat the steps (but now to the production site).
Keep in mind that changes in the production-site after the clone will be lost once restoring the new site.

thank you for the replies, I will check out the backup component and the interesting link... im still kind of new to all this so it will be pretty difficult and scary... but thank you for all the help...
I used the rocketlauncher for: Solar Sentinel... the newest version..... and the RokNewsflash module is broken.
When i go into the administrator and click on RokNewsflash (to edit some settings and check it out) .. the screen goes white and only some text shows up.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling RokNewsflash from downloading RokNewsflash from the download section within solar sentinel.... any ideas?

'Scary' is moving the site manually and editing all the proper files, with Akeeba everything is done automatically so you'll have no worries.

Creating a backup is very smart and (normally) will not damage you're site. Restoring it somewhere else (like you're local pc) will minimize the risk of damaging something by accident in you're production environment (especially if you're not completely sure what you're doing).
I tried the latest Akeeba Backup Core 3.0.rc1 (Release Candidate) while typing this. It is soooo easy.
Download it > Install it > left configuration on default > pressed the big backup button in backup now tab > and backup is made before i finished my coffee
speaking of.. brb.. :cheesy:
Download the backup (preferably by FTP) and use the AkeebaExtractWizard to extract the complete website.
Place or upload the website in you're test environment and look at it with a browser.
The wizard will now take you trough a few steps to restore the complete site. Be sure to fill in the correct database and not you're production database! I used a newly made in phpmyadmin.
Last step is removing the restore files by clicking the link and you're done.

I have to move a nearly finished joomla website from one host to another host... i just read your whole post and also every single page of documentation on akeebackup website.
It seems very simple... 10 steps... but then i read the documentation and there were so many settings... but you said you left everything on default and it all worked... well im totally convinced then! it should be simple enough.... i will back up the whole website first... which took me ages
then download it by ftp on a removable hard disc so its totally safe...
then i will try launch that backup on the new host.. if it fails because i did something wrong... i always have that copy on the hard disc to back me up!
thank you for your comments... doing something for the first time is always a challenge and i like that but i also dont want to destroy anything because i worked so hard on everything

you mean dont use the same database username, password and database name after you restore a backup??
i have to make a brand new database right? that makes sense in a way but not in another way... it didnt say in the documentation!

Yes, you have to set up a new DB on the host you will move the site to....
When you backup with Akeeba, it makes a copy of the site and the database, including the database username, password and database name.
When you run the install, and you get to the screen to enter this info, it will be filled in by default.
But remember, you have to enter the new database username, password and database name for the DB you created for the install.
Unless of course, you created the new DB with exactly the same database username, password and database name, but that is probably not the case...
For example I have close to 60 Joomla installs running on localhost, but for convenience every one of them shares the same user name and pass.
However, when I move installs from localhost to server, I change them.
So you just have to be aware of that, if your new DB as different info than what it displayed during the install, change it. - Thanks,

one very last question:
On the host that im working on the website now.. on the joomla rocketlauncher installation screen all the default values were right and it was all green..
on the other host i want to move it to 2 values were red:
configuration.php not Writable
and
Register Globals: on
I already manually changed the registered globals to off on the host but will the akeebackup find a problem because of the configuration.php is not writable ??
