Joomla 1.6 and phpBB3

    • I asked a previous question about how to bridge Joomla and phpbb3 and I was told through Rok Bridge and Rok NavMenu.

Well the question is about Joomla 1.6, is there a way to bridge the two. Can you use just Rok NavMenu or do you need both bridge and navmenu? Looks like Bridge will not be made available in 1.6.

I am just switching over from Drupal so this is all very new to me.

    • If you are planning on bridging the two systems, I would recommend staying with Joomla 1.5 for now. Joomla 1.6 is still really young and only supported for a few more months before they make another jump. Joomla 1.5 will be supported for another year at least and is already very stable.

    • I sincerely appreciate the response, can you clarify please? Keep in mind I am brand new to Joomla and used to Drupal.

Do you mean that there will be a Joomla 1.7 in the near future?

I am getting ready to develop a big site and hear great things about 1.6, how easy is it to upgrade to 1.6 from 1.5?

Just not sure what you mean by 1.6 will only be supported for a few more months before they make another jump???

    • I would also like to get a definitive answer on what the plans are for RT's phpBB3 products and Joomla 1.6. This is a primary extension I'll use that will probably decide whether I go with 1.5 or 1.6.

    • I PM'ed Mr. Lee and hoping to get a reply back soon. I hear very conflicting reports about how much better 1.6 is than 1.5? I guess my big question is how easy is it to upgrade to 1.6 when you develop in 1.5?

    • Joomla 1.5 has been around for a while and is very well tested and supported, both with security solidity and with extensions available.

Joomla 1.6 is a newer version and has promised new features but has not been tested thoroughly and is not as stable.

Joomla's new release cycle is confusing compared to what most of us are used to and it's best summed up in the following link:

You can read up on more info here:
      http://blog.lynda.com/2011/02/23/joomla-development-news-an-interview-with-jen-kramer-lynda-com-author/

Because Joomla 1.6 and Joomla 1.7 are short term releases, a migration strategy will most likely not even be looked at until 1.8.

If something you need requires you to go with Joomla 1.5, then I'd say you should go with 1.5.

    • Thank you very much for the reply. Wow Joomla is quite a bit different than Drupal, it really seems much more difficult. Guess I am a bit more advanced than I thought, from a programming and development standpoint, Drupal seems really much easier to develop if you know what you are doing.
