Joomla 1.5 or 1.6

This is a bit of an urgent question. I am really on the fence between Joomla 1.5 and Joomla 1.6. I am needing to start developing today and not sure which one to choose.
I just purchased a Joomla membership and I hear great things about Joomla 1.6 but not everything looks like it is ready to go.
If I develop a site in Joomla 1.5, how hard will it be to upgrade in the future? How much better is 1.6 than 1.5?
I am developing a social site using JomSocial and may integrate phpBB, I want to use the comment feature and quick cart (not yet 1.6 ready) and I need the performance to be good. Would you develop in 1.5 and upgrade later or should I just start in 1.6?
