Any issues using a template from 2008?

Posted 14 years 3 weeks ago
    • I was browsing through the templates for Joomla here on RT and came across one that I really liked from 2008. I realize that the 2008 template won't be on the Gantry framework.

Are there any other issues I would run in to with using a template from 2008? Will it still be compatible with all of the new modules / plug-ins that RT has created?

      Thanks in advance.

    • All of the individual extensions that RT has are compatible with all the templates, the only issue is whether there is built in matching styling for that extension on that template. The extensions will work and most of them have several style options, but to get it to completely match the template might take some css tweaking.

Look at RokTwittie styled for Entropy here:
      http://demo.rockettheme.com/apr11/index.php#rt-mainbody-panel
scroll down just a little to see RokTwittie on the right column

verses the standard RokTwittie layout styling that's included with the extension here:
      http://demo.rockettheme.com/extensions/roktwittie/

You will have fewer module positions, but I very very very rarely see sites that use the number of positions offered in the new templates anyways.

All in all, it's completely fine to go with older templates if the features they offer suit your needs.

    • Thanks for the quick response Ben.

The older templates are just as stable with security features as well?

I would say yes. Usually when a security vulnerability is posted for Joomla, if it's template specific, any templates based on that bit of code are checked and corrected. Some people choose the older templates as there is less dynamic code involved to offer up a security issue.

There is less activity on the forum from members for the older templates mostly because people usually want the newest thing with the newest features, but we support all of them and check all forums regularly to provide assistance.

The only other thing to consider is if you're moving to Joomla 1.6. Migrating templates over to Joomla 1.6 is a real time consuming thing, so a template from 2008 might not make it to the move...at least not anytime soon. But many of us are sticking with Joomla 1.5 for a good long while so it will be fine to use there.
