SOLVED Joomla 1.5 vs 1.6

    • Hey everyone, I wanted to wait a bit until 1.6 got the kinks worked out and plugins were updated. Does anyone see a reason why I shouldn't do new installs with 1.6? Should I upgrade my current sites to 1.6 or leave them working perfectly fine using 1.5? I'm sure there's a thread for this, but I didn't find anything specifically. Thanks in advance!

    • First, there is no 'update' for J1.5 to J1.6.

The process is a 'migration', not an 'update'.

The first problem lies in the fact that to date, Joomla has not produced an 'official' migration script (nor AFAIK do they plan to create one with J1.7 on the horizon).

So, you are left on your own to find some 3rd party migration script that may or may not work for you.

(Or if you really want to convert a current site from J1.5 to J1.6, use the old fashioned way, and cut and paste all the content from your old site to the new one... which may work if your site is small, but if it's large, that option is impractical.)

The second problem is that once J1.7 becomes stable, the EOL clock starts ticking for J1.6.

When the stable version of J1.7 is released, J1.6 will reach EOL 30 day later (according to Joomla sources).

      Basically, like it never existed.

In short, take a look at Andy's post here:

      www.rockettheme.com/blog/joomla/988-shou...upgrade-to-joomla-16

There are probably over 100 topics on this exact issue, I'm sure you can find them if you search, but if you can't, let me know and I will provide links to the most relevant.

Bottom line, stick with J1.5 unless it's life or death, keep in mind that many of the 3rd party components you use may not be J1.6 ready (along with the fact they are also waiting for J1.7)... etc...

Why manually convert a site now when you can have a migration script later...?

Why convert a site now when you will have to upgrade / migrate later...?

      Just my 2 yen...
    • Thanks,
