Best way for users to browse older content?

    • I've played with the archive module as bit...as far as I understand it it requires me to manually "archive" each article as it comes of the front page. That seems like needless extra work--a cms should provide automation!--plus I think I'm guaranteed to miss articles once in a while, sending them into never-neverland.

I may be off track but I think you are asking how to browse items that have been pushed off the front page but not so old that you want to archive?
If so you can create a menu link to each category and set it to blog with more items displayed
also make sure the pagination is turned on so they can look at older articles

Again if I am wrong sorry for the post.

    • Hi Timothy,

You've got it exactly right--the only catch is that I want a *single* menu item for the browse function rather than multiple menu items corresponding to each category or section.

My ideal solution would be the menu-->table-->section if only you could choose multiple sections. The blog--sections choice DOES allow multiple sections but it doesn't seem to allow formatting like the table does with content item title, date of publication, etc.

Another great look is the results you get after a search--title, date and a snippet of the text. Great! If only there was a way to have a search performed that would return ALL of the content items, by reverse date. I don't see any way to do it...

As it is, I'm setting up menu links to certain kinds of content (e.g. video columnists) but would love something (in addition) that simply lists all of the content items, by reserve date.

Seem so simple and would seem to be such a fundamental function of a cms...I'm still puzzled!

    • Try new menu item blog content section
In the choose section list select "All Sections"
Then set the parameters to show how ever many items you want to show in what ever format.
I think you can do the same with some table sections too

    • Hello,

      Still working on this...

I don't see a way to make the tables option allow multiple categories or sections--if anyone knows a way then my troubles are solved...

As for the blog option, I have a test on my site right now: http://www.montarafog.com  go to "Search/Browse" then submenu "Browse"--but though I've forced the date and author options to "show" (also tried "global") I still see only the titles...

If I could get the dates to show that would at least be a workable (though ugly!) solution for now...

    • Found a solution: The module "Display New by BK"

You can see it in action on http://www.montarafog.com  Choose "Search/Browse" and then "Browse."

Many, many configurable options so it can look very different if you want it to.

Very surprised this isn't built into Joomla!

Thanks for all the help on this...
