overall my take on js and stuff like it is, it's MUCH easier to remove than to add. So if you don't like JS for example (and lots don't, let's be honest). You can remove it without much fuss, and the overall design remains unchanged. But, if you wanted to take an older template and add js stuff to it in a way that really fits the style of the template, well that's a much bigger job.
I feel the latest breed of templates allows you the user/developer to get the template you want with even less fuss that before. We've done all the leg work for you.

so far the bells and whistles that have come with RT templates have been great.. rokzoom provides great eye-candy but has pro's and cons for usability:
+ Viewer is not taken to another page to view the larger version of an image.
- When used in Album mode: when you click 'Next', the image disappears and often you are left with no clue as to what has happened/is happening. My folks would get real worried and wonder what they did wrong i'm sure.

Got to agree with Andy here. I have been removing lots of stuff from templates for a while now, and indeed it is easier to chop it out than to put it in.
I do like the way this months template looks, it's pretty. I am sure many can put it to good use.
(It's an RT original for cryin out loud!)
More over just a general conversation on the state of things.
In keeping with the light-hearted, good natured spirit of this post's author I am merely adding to the discussion.
RT has the BEST community, and the BEST templates you will find bar none .
Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

One additional thought, in keeping with the positive tone of the discussion, and responding to Andy's most recent post... the technological bells and whistles (MooTools, JS, etc.) that Andy includes are what really makes RocketTheme templates worth their weight in gold. I remember the old days of Mambo, where I would find a free template, but then I'd have to find all kinds of extra add-ons to use drop-down menus, and coding the look of the template was much more work. Now, I can't imagine going back!

I would agree, after finding Joomla last Dec and taking to it like fish and water my personal site isnt going live till next saturday.....MUCH of my time between now and last Dec has been trying to get the functionality I HAD to have and trying out ALL options on all browsers etc etc etc.. in the end there was A LOT of sacrifices. I keep hearing myself telling a friend,, "yes I would LOVE to use this or that becuse it looks kewl,, but the things that work, in the end, after all,, are the old tried and tested and BORING usuall mods , plugs and comps"
and much of my time these last few months has been making them look better becasue the funtionality is there to boot....
I am going to wait on J1.5 and all of this web 2.0 fanatisicim to mature before moving on to updating my site

I was a little surprised when I read that. We all know just how much you love domain parkers, tasters, kiters, etc. Not saying this is one for sure, but quite a few of these are out there for one reason.
They log those search results and use them to taste domains and/or they sells the logs to domaineers. Some go as far as autoregistration of anything that meets certain criteria, such as dictionary word, multiple dictionary word, etc. This way they have people giving them ideas to follow up on automatically.
Just an FYI
PS the best way to search for domain if you aren't ready to buy at that very second, is just drop to any CLI and use nslookup. If it can't be found, it's usually available.

Thanks Mack, appreciate the advice.
Yes I have been aware of the dodgy whois services for quite a while now.
My only reason for trusting this one is that it is owned by a guy who's done quite a bit and is quite respected in the web techonolgy community. Read about him at

Apparently his next project is a spamblocker dimilar to akismet.
