Public Launch of a Site?

I'm getting ready to launch another website I've made. With my previous sites I've used these tactics:
- Go to forums that have similar topics and PM users to come check out my site
- Made business cards and passed them out at events (of similar interests)
- Google Ads
- Just told friends to tell friends to tell friends...yada yada yada
I'm looking for something clever/attention getting to do with this new site launch. The new site is a Christian Community for the town in which I live. I'd like to make some sort of 'splash' with the launch of this site.
So, how/what did you guys do when you launched your sites? What are some unique ways to go after users?

If its for a local Chrisitan community, can you not just inform them in person or by post?

It's a pretty big town I live in, but yeah word of mouth will be huge, but I'm trying to think of 'what else'?
Plus, I would be very interested to hear what others have done to launch their sites.

Did you submit the sites to search engines and optimize your site for search engines?
Does your church have a big sign outside> [see pic]

im thinking off the wall here (especially since its a christian church group - but it may work out great)
graffiti!
yeh i know but hear me out
you pay for the advertising space (i.e a billboard ect)
and then you pay some local kids (if there are any artisitic ones) or an artist
and get them to graffiti that space - with say your web adress or a slogan or such
(get them to do it in the dead of night - and you have gosip) - ps make sure the police are aware
by the way this depends on how much you want to spend
