Restyling Sites Without Interfering With Current Users
Posted 13 years 3 months ago
Hello,
Suppose we have an existing Joomla site on a production server, and we are asked to significantly revamp the styling (e.g., install a RocketTheme template, move various widgets around, CSS modifications, etc.).
I do not want to revamp the styling on the production site itself, because this will interfere with the browsing experience of current users.
Therefore, I use Akeeba backup to make a local copy of the production Joomla site, and then revamp the styling on my local machine (which is faster to work with as well).
However, say a few weeks later when I'm done, I need to export only the stylistic changes on my local machine to the production server. What's the best way to do this step?
(Note that I cannot just replace the production server's Joomla with an Akeeba backup of my local machine's Joomla, because during the weeks when we are restyling on the local machine, users will be actively changing content on the production server.)

Hi,
I believe that you will need to install the template on your production server and copy all the changed files from your development server to your production server

I don't understand. You will need to transfer all the files that you changed. If you don't know which files you changed then this can be a problem, don't you think

The restyling changes are made in the Joomla GUI, so I am not clear about which files are modified when various buttons are clicked, such as enabling/disabling modules on certain pages, and adjusting the gantry styling options. Sorry I am not familiar enough with how Joomla works yet.

I am sorry but changing module positions and placement is not restyling. Restyling is if you are changing template colors and mess around the template files.
Module placement is stored in the database so you will have to export/import DB tables that holds module configurations.
