What is your preference for building a joomla site?

    • I'm curious how everyone does it, I have only built the site while it was on the server in a folder that only I knew and when it was ready migrated to the main public_html folder.
I've seen that a joomla site can be built on your computer then uploaded when its finished, but with all the initial bugs I always have with joomla I'm wondering if that is self defeating?

speaking of bugs, is the initial setup just as trying for everyone else? I've started the build on 4 sites, and have a 5th one possible. 2 are done and were done on my own VPS , 1 was thru a host that I had no access to the server side end to fix any permissions problems and the guy made it seem like I was bugging him each time and eventually called joomla a POS so I stopped the build, and 1 i am building for myself this week. to build a joomla site it seems we really NEED to have that server access because it doesn't run perfect out of the box. (at least 1.5 and 1.7 didnt, maybe 2.5 will be different?) I only keep at it because the templates from here are fantastic and i like being able to teach the site owners how to do their own article updates so they can have a little free range once its built and i don't have to worry about them destroying something

    • I honestly don't understand your question (or questions) 8) What kind of answer do you actually expect to get? Creating your dev environment is purely on your own and how you will develop your web sites greatly depends on what you are used to do and how. Personally I tend to develop on my own VPS so I can show to the client that everything is working. If something is not working when I transfer web site to his own server, well, that is not my mistake and usually I can charge more to get things fixed on his own server

    • Maybe using Akeeba Backup will make it easier to move sites to different servers. It has a Joomla-like install wizard that helps get everything configured correctly when moving from one hosting environment to another.

I have had problems in the past when I have developed a site that runs perfectly on my hosting. The client insisted I host on his hosting account. After I installed the site on his hosting account the site was (still is) slow as molasses. He complained about the site performance & I explained the same identical site is performing extremely well on my uncrowded hosting account (which costs a premium) & sent him links to both sites & also links to sites that list how many/what other sites are hosted on a server & a site that gives you info on site speed & performance so he could compare the exact same site hosted on different servers for himself.

I had another client who insisted I host a site on his hosting account & the server was not set up to host a current version of Joomla. It had a very old version of PHP & none of the PHP settings were turned on that were necessary for Joomla to run. I spent a lot of time going back & forth with the hosting company to get the server set up to be able to host the site.

I then decided any sites I build have to be hosted on my hosting account & if they don't like that I don't build the site for them. It is not worth my time to fix their hosting environments & I can't fix the overcrowding on cheap hosting problem for them.

The instances described above are not Joomla problems they are hosting environment problems. Joomla is not a POS, it sounds like the server set up was though. You can have a server that does meet all the minimum requirements for hosting a Joomla site but because of overcrowding the site performs very badly.

So to answer your question. You can develop the site locally or on any server & if you use Akeeba Backup to move the site you can easily move it to any hosting environment. The only problems you will encounter is if the hosting environment is not suitable or set up correctly for Joomla.
