Latest News links don't work

I hope it's ok to post this here. I've
tried the Joomla installation forum
but with no luck...
I'm using plain old solarflare on a practice site (Joomla 1.0.12) for students at maj.schoolofcomms.net/majtimes/ . I've got the Latest News module published (public), and it's picking up stories as expected and linking to them. However, they are bringing the user to a 'you must log in' message. The same stories are accessible in full view via the Main Menu, showing the same url. The stories concerned are each published and public.
I'm wondering if this might be a template issue, or if anyone here might have any pointers... I'm asking now because I am about to publish a site that will need the Latest News module as a critical piece of content.
