Bootstap and Joomla 3.0 ?

    • Just a quick post to see if we can get a little heads up on RT's thoughts about directions for J!3 and the recent news about using Twitter's Bootstrap framework ?

I know a lot of effort has gone into Gantry and the supporting templates, so I would suspect the redesigned UX in J!3 is going to have a big impact.

Will you guys adapt Gantry & templates to support Bootstrap ?

      Cheers,

    • We've been following and using bootstrap on our internal projects for quite some time. That said, it's something that is designed to help kickstart web design by providing a base foundation of html and css structure. We will have to see how J!3 uses bootstrap and makes it available for developers before we will truly know how we are going to use it in the future.

We have no plans on converting existing templates and extensions to use bootstrap because these are already built and that doesn't really make any sense. Going forward, we have plans on using many bootstrap features in our next version of Gantry and therefore in our future templates. We already use a lot of bootstrap functionality in the admin of RokSprocket that was developed using LESS and with many mixins provided by bootstrap. We did our own take on the UI so it feels a bit more unique and less 'bootstrap' which I fear is going to become very boring and very tired fast based on it's huge popularity.

The most likely outcome is will continue to use portions of Bootstrap in all our development efforts going forward as somethings about it are are fantastic. However we don't have plans to use the full bootstrap framework as-is, because it's pretty large and most of it would go unused, and also because it doesn't provide for a very unique or interesting UI.

    • Andy - appreciate the detailed response! Thanks.

Perhaps my question could have been clearer, but you answered it anyway and that's you are continuing to develop/extend Gantry in to the new J!3 world which will have bootstrap elements included. :-)

Perhaps a broader question - what are your thoughts regarding the future of 3rd party frameworks (such as Gantry) given the move towards an "inbuilt" framework such as bootstrap.
I appreciate the UI can be pretty "boring" or repetative but isn't that where template artists come in ?
