adding a website to my original website with a new template

Posted 17 years 8 months ago
    • hi all
im aboui finishing my first website using replicant template and i want to add a section for sport news .. so i decided to bulild a new site using one of sporticus templats and i have 2 questions about that ..

1- is it a good idea that i build a whole entire site or there is an easy way i didn't think about it ...

2 - what are the differences between the soprticus templates ? is it just the mdoule poistions ? thats the only difference i've noticed .. and the colors ..

3- can i use one mysql for both sites so the users which exist in my old site will also have access in the new one ? ?

4-lets say we can use the same data base.... if one of the users in the old site has a manger access would has the same access in the new site ?? of each website has his one access levels

      5- thanks alot ;)

    • if the sports section is part of the orignal site you don't need to create an entirely new joomla site. just create a sport section in your content and make sure that all sports article are part of that section (let say you call it Sports). Then just add a new menu item for this section in your main menu (or whatever the primary menu you are using in your site).

if you want a different template for that section of the site, I believe there is an assign botton in the site template manager where it allows you to assign a different template for a menu selection.

      Hope this helps! ;)

      addition:
and by the way, if the template that you will use allows you to change primary menu like most of the new RT templates, you can assign a different menu for your sports section by changing the default menu of that template. just make sure you can still go back to the home page.

    • ok that helped alot thank u alot .. i never noticed that we can assaign templates for certain sections :D

im gonna with this choice .. its much easier instead of building a new one ..but i believe that i can't assign one user to modefy just this section ,.,, so the user who can publish an article will have access to the entire wite .. right ?

    • I am not sure about controling users to only edit certain section of the site content but there is a work around that I have done similar to controlling user where they can post contents.

If a user is allowed to submit content from the user menu, they can select a category from the news section. Where I am going is, you can also create a sports category in your news section instead of creating a new sports section; then assign a menu item to the primary menu and finally assign it a template. This way users don't have to login to the administrator and see everything. You have full control of where the contents are going and administrator is safe from other users.

This is just one way, there maybe other ways that I have not explored on but it still works on the desired pupose.

And BTW, I am just sharing you what I have played around with. Again hope this helps... ;)

i played around with it in this dev site http://joomladev.alain.info click on Blog, this section uses colormatic template with the othermenu as the primary menu.

    • Ok. We need to create a section or category.
      • Create the sports section or category
      • Create a menu item for this sports section or category (primary menu or any menu) Blog Section or Blog Category
      • Go to Site Template, select the template you want to assign to the sports section or category
      • Click the Assign button from the toolbar (upper right corner)
      • Now select the sports item from the menu lists

Now you have assigned a template to the sports section or category. Now a different menu for that section, right?
      • Create a new menu and call it like sports or anything
      • assign all the item you want and save
      • you said you were going to use the RT Sporticus, change the primary menu of this template. how: http://tutorials.rockettheme.com/joomla-templates/sporticus-tutorials/menu-options.html
      • now go back to the site template manager and select sporticus then click assign. you will notice that the new menu you created will appear the but not selected.
      • add them in your selection. this make sure that the same template is used when you click on of this menu item

That should do it. Other things you need with sporticus: http://tutorials.rockettheme.com/joomla-templates/sporticus-tutorials

      Hope this helps.
